Dr. Imogene Mixson’s passion for education began when she was a child. She was always very excited by, interested in, and excelled in her own academic pursuits. When she was in the sixth, ninth and twelfth grades, she was recognized as the valedictorian of her class, demonstrating not only her passion but also her capacity to learn and utilize this knowledge. Upon graduating from high school, she attended Troy University to receive a Bachelor of Science in 1959. She continued at Auburn University, receiving a Master of Science in 1963. Knowing the value of continuing education throughout her career, Dr. Mixson earned a PhD from Florida State University in 1972 and continued with postdoctoral coursework at Troy State University and the University of Southern Mississippi.
Presently retired, Dr. Mixson can reflect on a long and established career in education. Prior to retiring in 1996, she served as the Academic Dean of Wallace State Community College, Dothan, Alabama. She began in this post in 1983, a year after joining the institution as an English instructor and assistant academic dean. She previously taught and served as the chairman of the English department of Enterprise State Community College. Earlier in her career, Dr. Mixson was an English teacher at Dothan High School, maintaining this role from 1959 to 1966.
In addition to these positions, Dr. Mixson served as interim president of Alabama Aviation College, Ozark, Alabama, and of Wallace State Community College. From 1986 to 2006, she was on the advisory board of the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities at Auburn University. Furthermore, she was a coordinator of the Professional Development Task Force of the Alabama Community College System from 1984 to 1986.
Throughout Dr. Mixson’s career, the highlight that has stood out the most was in 2016, when she was selected for alumnus awards from all three of the institutions she graduated from- Troy University, Auburn University, and Florida State University. It was not just about receiving these awards, but what the awards represented, reminding her of so many wonderful people who helped her along the way. Dr. Mixson has also particularly enjoyed her time as an educator during the moments when her students understood the subject matter and excelled. Dr. Mixson takes pleasure in seeing others learn, and being part of that experience. While enjoying her retirement, she intends to continue her strong commitment to lifelong learning and lifelong service. She remains passionate about promoting educational opportunities for both students and faculty.
